Wolf Hat Poem 1991, by Susie Haley (12 years old at the time).  Written to bestow this honour upon the recipient of her choice that year, Mr. Norman MacKenzie.

Ladies and gentlemen, last year I became the proud recipient of the infamous Wolf Hat. This hat had its mysterious beginnings with Woody Boychuk. I am not sure at all what possessed him to produce such a thing. After all, it is head, front feet and tail, and is missing some very important parts. However, produce it he did, and obviously for his own reasons. These reasons, (whatever they may have been), seemed to be passing it on to Mr. Dave Unger. This was, in inverted commas, bestowed on Mr. Ralph Archibald, our fur-carnivore specialist. I think this was to encourage him in his job.

He in turn passed it on to Mr. Len Smith. This was in recognition of a job well done. The job involved making a statement to some antis in a stairwell, as I understand it. On returning to his own local association, Mr. Smith shared the honor with Pierre Barrette who had assisted him in making his “statement.”

The next year came, and Mr. Smith presented it to a man who has contributed a great deal to the spirit and life of our organization. Mike Green, in his turn, somehow saw fit to bestow it on me. Allegedly, I represented the youth of the organization. I was more flattered and honored by this than any thing that ever happened to me. Now it is my turn to hand it over.

My selection for this year was made for respectful purposes. As I represent one of the pups of the pack, he is most certainly one of the alpha wolves. As he writes poetry, I saw it fitting to write some myself. Please bear with me, as my father helped me write this:

SUSIE’S WOLF HAT POEM:

A very big man in size he is not,
A big man in other ways, he is quite a lot.
Jack of all trades, an author he is too,
A poet, a cook, a horse he can shoe;
Running a trapline, he once did this too.

First came to this country, long while ago,
Put his hand to the trade we all feign to know.
Made snares of string, even scented with pooh,
Invented attractors of all kinds of goo.
No tellin’ at meals what went into the stew.

Trapped as he did, he got caught in a snare,
A girl from Saskatchewan, she had quite a flare.
Off he dragged her to a year under a wagon,
That first winter was warm, under that old cart,
Fire wasn’t much, twas an affair of the heart.

Things got better, a cabin on Kahntah,
Just the two of them, Norman and Iva,
Dogs and a sledge and a long line to run,
Tons of hard work but still lots of fun.
Long springs and snares and even a gun.

I heard a story, an anecdote,
Bout this man on his line, and a mean black bloke.
Followed by a bear, things got really tight,
Norm swung some traps, no gun was in sight,
Smote on the nose, before he could bite.

Another, of Winston, the best of them all,
A wise old loup who stood three feet tall,
Ran Norman around that line for two years,
Missing some toes, he still had good ears,
But Norm won that round, you’ll have no fears.

So when it came time to give up the hat,
My choice was easy, you can bet on that,
By the end of this poem you’re all in your cups,
It’s with great pleasure this hat I give up,
To the old Alpha Wolf, from one of the pups.

Ladies and Gentlemen, It is with due respect, I pass on this infamous skin – to Norman MacKenzie.
